چکیده
Purpose: Characterization of the D-glucose tnnsport acms isolated normal and diabetic rabtnt retmal vessels wing " in vitro " lriicmpxfusicm techniques. Methods: After manual dissection and caonulation of normal and diabetic retinal vessels, they were penis4 with %D-gluar;e and 'H-inulin and studied under different cqcrimental conditions. Results We observed in normal retinal vessels a significant decrease of the lumen to bath D-ghmse transport by oubain (0. I mWl-p< 0 OS), by phlorizin (0.1 mM-p< 0.01) and in the absence of Na+ m the perfusion and bath solutions (pc 0 01). In diabetic retinal vffsels these inhibitory &cls were not found Conclusions: We showed m B previous work a D-glucose transport acmss rabbit retinal vessels involving a carrier mediated tmntporl system which was increased in diabetic retinal vessels. In this study we demonstrated, for the first time, the existence in normal retinal vessels of a Na+ i~~vohwnznt in this tnmpoa, wluch was not seen in diabetic vessels demonswating an alteration of wxular permeability to glucose in these arterioles xgmentt S96

Glucose transport in brain and retina: implications in the management and complications of diabetes.
Neural tissue is entirely dependent on glucose for normal metabolic activity. Since glucose stores in the brain and retina are negligible compared to glucose demand, metabolism in these tissues is dependent upon adequate glucose delivery from the systemic circulation. In the brain, the critical interface for glucose transport is at the brain capillary endothelial cells which comprise the blood-...
متن کاملDiabetes downregulates GLUT1 expression in the retina and its microvessels but not in the cerebral cortex or its microvessels.
Capillaries in the retina are more susceptible to develop microvascular lesions in diabetes than capillaries in the embryologically similar cerebral cortex. Because available evidence implicates hyperglycemia in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy, differences in glucose transport into the retina and brain might contribute to this observed tissue difference in susceptibility to diabetes-in...
متن کاملA three-pore model describes transport properties of bovine retinal endothelial cells in normal and elevated glucose.
PURPOSE Changes in blood vessel barrier properties contribute to retinal edema in diabetic retinopathy (DR). However, limited data are available to describe the routes of transport for fluids and solutes across the inner blood-retinal barrier (iBRB). In this study, a three-pore model was developed to characterize such routes in normal and elevated glucose levels. METHODS Diffusive and apparen...
متن کاملMorphological Exudate Detection in Retinal Images using PCA-based Optic Disc Removal
Diabetic retinopathy lesion detection such as exudate in fundus image of retina can lead to early diagnosis of the disease. Retinal image includes dark areas such as main blood vessels and retinal tissue and also bright areas such as optic disk, optical fibers and lesions e.g. exudate. In this paper, a multistage algorithm for the detection of exudate in foreground is proposed. The algorithm se...
متن کاملForskolin attenuates retinal inflammation in diabetic mice
The present study aimed to investigate the effect of forskolin on retinal inflammation under diabetic conditions. C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into normal control, diabetic control and forskolin treatment groups. The diabetic model was established by intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin. The forskolin treatment group received intragastrical administration of forskolin for 12 weeks,...
